Caring for Your Sunglasses

Whether it’s a designer brand or something you bought at a flea market, you have no reason to not take good care of your sunglasses. They are meant to last for years. So when you find the perfect pair of sunglasses for you, do yourself a favor and give it the utmost care.

Here are a few tips on how to give your sunglasses the care that they deserve. Follow them and you would never have to go running back at the wholesale sunglasses section of the department store only to buy the same pair.

Always handle with care

Some of us have the habit of putting on or removing our sunglasses with one hand. This needs to be corrected as it not only stretches the side arms of the sunglasses, it also bends the frames. Always use both hands. Another thing that gives the same effect is when you wear your sunglasses on your head. Furthermore, it can scratch the lenses. The last thing you want to do is abuse your sunglasses with your own hands. If you have to put them down, do it in a way that the side of the lens is facing upward.

The case has its purpose

When not in use, it is good practice to put your sunglasses inside its case. But before doing so, wrap your sunglasses with a cotton cloth so that they are completely protected. Sometimes, a new pair of sunglasses comes with a case. If not or if you want a sturdier one, you can always purchase from the nearest optical shop. This is particularly advisable if you are looking to store your sunglasses for a longer period of time.

For some of you who think that leaving your sunglasses in the dashboard of your car won’t do any harm, think again. Sunglasses should be kept away from extreme cold and heat as they may damage both the lens and the frame especially with longer exposure.

Check/clean them everyday

Some people have the habit of breathing to the lenses to get them moist, and then wiping them with their shirt or whatever piece of cloth there is available. This is simply not good. When cleaning your sunglasses, soap and water will suffice. They wash away dust and oil buildup. Aside from the lenses, also clean the hinges, screws, and nose pad. Never use paper towels, tissue paper or anything with a rough surface when wiping as it will cause scratch marks. Also, never wipe them when they are dry. For those of you who do not like the idea of using soap in cleaning your sunglasses, there are eyewear cleaning sets available at an optical shop nearest you.
